Day 2 of 13 Days of Halloween 2018

It’s Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus!

A tradition of the Halloween holiday, besides dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating, and consuming pumpkin-spiced goods, is watching the movie Hocus Pocus. It’s a movie that’s become synonymous with holiday, and ever since I was a kid it is the movie to watch on Halloween. When I was younger, planning to watch Hocus Pocus on TV was an event, at least in my family. In fact, I can distinctly remember being terrified during the part of the movie when the witches attack the kids as they’re driving a getaway car and Winifred tries to pull Max through the window. These days, however, Hocus Pocus has become even more meaningful, and the magic all started when a little black cat started coming to our porch a few months ago.

Meet the newest member of our family: Binx, the black cat.

Day 2 of Halloween 2018

Binx pretty much adopted us as his family when about four months ago he started coming around for food and pretty much never left. Originally, he was a pretty feral cat and who would run away any time he heard or saw a human. We knew he was coming around to eat at the small bowl of dry cat food we leave out on our porch (for a couple other neighborhood cats that we feed), but soon the strangest thing happened…Binx and Shadow (one of our other inside cats) started to fall in love.

You see, we have a metal screen door and so we like to be able to leave our front door open with just the screen door closed. At night our cats, Orion, George and Shadow, love to sit in front of the screen door and watch the world outside. Well, night was also the time that Binx would always come to visit our porch and before we knew it our cats and Binx started talking to each other through the screen door. In particular, Shadow would wait for him at the door and they would meow and meow at each other, rub against the screen door on either side, and fall asleep staring at one another through the door. Even when it was time to close the front door Shadow would jump on the front window’s ledge while Binx would jump up and sit on a tall planter that sits against the window on the outside and they would continue to stare at each other through the window. It truly was magical to watch their interactions with one another.

So, of course, it was an easy decision to officially adopt Binx into our family. He truly is our Halloween cat. Given his coloring, bright orange collar, and the time of year the name Binx seemed to fit him best.

Maybe it was fate, magic, or just Hocus Pocus…whatever you want to call it..I’m just glad he’s ours.

P.S. Let us know which Halloween movie is your favorite in the comments below!

Day 1 of 13 Days of Halloween 2018

It’s that time of year again!

The weather is cooling down, the leaves are starting to change colors, festive holiday decorations start to make an appearance, and pumpkin spice seems to permeate the air everywhere you go. It’s the start of the holiday season, and it all starts with Halloween.

That’s right: It’s the start of 13 Days of Halloween here at Play Hard, Bark Often!

It’s our annual countdown to Halloween, which means for the next 13 days until October 31st we’ll be posting every day to share tricks, treats, and other Halloween-related and inspired content.

We’re kicking things off this year by dressing up our favorite blocky-headed dogs into our favorite “blockhead.” We may still have quite a few days until the Great Pumpkin makes an appearance, but what better way to start off the 13 Days of Halloween than dress up as the original character himself.

All you need to pull off this punny costume yourself is an old yellow shirt (I found one at the local thrift store), some black material (it could be another old shirt, scrap material, felt, or pillowcase), and some fabric adhesive.

Next, simply cut out the wavy pattern from the black material. Then, adhere the black material to the bottom of the yellow shirt. Finally, put the shirt on your dog.

I really like this costume because it’s a great way to usher in the season of the Great Pumpkin, and doubles as a fun, creative way to celebrate the “blocky-headediness” that defines pit bulls.

Thanks for being here for Day 1 of 13 Days of Halloween and make sure to check back tomorrow to see what’s in store for Day 2.

In the meantime, the annual search for the Great Pumpkin is on!

Come on a Walk with Us!

Lately, the weather in California has been hot, hot, hot! On our daily walks with Simon and Rosee we haven’t been able to walk for very long or go very far. Yet, this morning the weather was warm, but pleasant enough that we could go on one of our favorite walking routes. So, come on our walk with us today and definitely don’t forget your sunscreen!

We started off by going out our front door and down our street. Simon and Rosee were especially excited and couldn’t wait to go…
Picture 1

We walked down, down, down past the local high school, a bunch of bushes that Simon particularly likes to rub against as we walk by, and even a yard sale sign that kind of freaked Rosee out (she wouldn’t walk by it)…

Picture 2We ended up at a local park about a mile away from home and spans across two blocks and has tons of trees which offer lots of shade from the California sun along with numerous spots for the pups to leave their marks…Picture 3We continued through the second block of the park (technically a different park), which is where Simon decided he needed a break in the grass (it was still wet from the early morning sprinkler), but it did put us a little behind Monica and Rosee who was eagerly sniffing her way down the grass–Rosee, not Monica, by the way…Picture 4Then, we started to make our way back home and decided to continue down the side street (instead of back through the two parks) that runs along the west end of town since it’s still pretty shady from the many trees planted along the sidewalk and that just means so much more to sniff…Picture 5As we made our way home Simon started to slow down a little, but Rosee kept her pace (she’s much better at conserving her energy and maintaining her pace unlike Simon)…Picture 6

Ultimately, we had a wonderful morning walk and ended up with two tired pups who were happy to indulge in afternoon naps!

Thanks for joining us on our Saturday morning walk and you can totally tell people you went on a 3 mile walk this morning (we won’t tell anyone)!
